Originating from Kutch, Gujarat, this old Damchiya features a richly decorated wooden façade filled with hand-carved geometric, linear, floral-inspired, and traditional motifs. Repeated carved borders and small decorative patterns extend across the front, giving the piece its characteristic handcrafted appearance.
“The Damchiya also features a concealed wooden storage compartment, traditionally known as a ‘Chor Khana,’ which was used to discreetly store valuables and other important belongings.”
Numerous real mirror pieces are incorporated throughout the front in both round and rectangular forms. The mirrors are surrounded by aged metal detailing and arranged between the carved wooden sections, creating the distinctive decorative character associated with traditional Kutch furniture.
The central section opens through two wooden doors and provides access to the storage space inside. The doors retain traditional-style aged iron hinges, strips, brackets, and locking fittings, which add to the authentic old construction of the piece. The upper section does not open.
A particularly striking feature is the pair of hand-carved wooden horse forms positioned at the two upper corners. The horse elements also feature subtle carved detailing, adding a sculptural architectural character to the Damchiya.
The piece stands on four wooden legs. The two front legs feature prominent turned and rounded carved detailing, while the two rear legs are simpler in design, preserving the original functional construction of the piece.
Its naturally aged old wood colour displays visible grain, tonal variations, patina, and years of natural wear. Since this is an authentic vintage piece, small cracks, fine splits, scratches, old holes, worn carving, uneven areas, dark marks, aged surfaces, and colour variations can naturally be seen throughout.
